Aviation Fuel Shortage Threatens Summer Travel: Experts Warn of Flight Cancellations

As the peak summer travel season approaches, experts are sounding the alarm over a growing aviation fuel shortage that could lead to widespread flight disruptions. John Gradek, a faculty lecturer in Aviation Management and Supply Chain Management at McGill University, warns that the odds of flight cancellations in June and July are increasing daily.

Shortages to Hit Europe First

In an interview with FRANCE 24’s Sharon Gaffney, Gradek highlighted that the fuel shortage will likely impact short-haul flights within Europe before spreading to other regions. “The aviation industry is facing significant challenges, and fuel supply is becoming a critical issue,” he said. “Travelers need to be prepared for potential disruptions.”

Why Is This Happening?

The aviation fuel shortage stems from a combination of factors, including:

  • Increased demand: Post-pandemic travel rebound has led to a surge in flights, straining fuel supplies.
  • Supply chain disruptions: Geopolitical tensions and logistical bottlenecks have hampered fuel distribution.
  • Refinery constraints: Limited refining capacity has exacerbated the shortage, particularly in Europe.

What Travelers Should Do

Gradek advises travelers to have contingency plans in place. “If anybody’s got reservations, be prepared for plan B or plan C,” he said. Here are some steps to minimize disruption:

  • Monitor flight status: Stay updated on your airline’s notifications and check for cancellations regularly.
  • Book flexible tickets: Opt for refundable or changeable tickets to avoid last-minute losses.
  • Consider alternative routes: Look for flights with fewer connections or different departure times.

Industry Response

Airlines and airports are scrambling to mitigate the impact. Some carriers are reducing frequencies on less profitable routes, while others are prioritizing long-haul flights. Meanwhile, industry groups are urging governments to address the supply chain issues.

As the situation evolves, travelers are advised to stay informed and flexible to navigate what could be a turbulent summer for air travel.
