Businessman Tumelo Nku Linked to Massive Cocaine Shipment in Johannesburg Bust

Businessman Tumelo Nku Implicated in Major Cocaine Drug Bust

The Madlanga Commission has unveiled startling revelations about businessman Tumelo Nku’s alleged involvement in a 751-kilogram cocaine shipment that was intercepted in Johannesburg. Testimonies from Hawks Lieutenant Colonel Nkoana Sebola have painted a troubling picture of collusion between Nku and corrupt police officials, raising serious questions about the integrity of law enforcement in South Africa.

Tracking the Cocaine Route

During the commission’s proceedings, Sebola disclosed that Nku’s cellphone was tracked along the N3 highway, indicating he was following the same route as the truck transporting the cocaine from Durban to Johannesburg. “Mr. Nku was from Durban, either following the truck… he was on the same route as the drugs,” Sebola explained. This tracking was critical in establishing Nku’s connection to the drug shipment, which was seized at a Scania warehouse in Aeroton in July 2021.

Allegations of Corruption and Collusion

Nku is facing serious allegations of colluding with corrupt police officers in a purported heist attempt to steal the drugs. According to Sebola, Nku provided the initial tip-off about the illicit cargo to his handler, Hawks General Samuel Mashaba, who was then the head of Gauteng traffic police. Together, they allegedly coordinated a false police operation to seize the shipment, which was interrupted by the Hawks.

Text Messages Reveal Involvement

In a shocking turn of events, Sebola presented text messages extracted from Nku’s device that revealed conversations between him and Mashaba, as well as interactions with an individual referred to as “Alpha.” These messages showcased their discussions about the shipment, including urgent requests for photos of the drug containers and concerns about delays compromising their operation.

  • Alpha’s Pressing Demands: “Can you get the pics of the container and seal? The longer you take with it, the more nervous they get,” Alpha wrote, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
  • Nku’s Attempts to Comply: Nku responded, “The guy at Crains says we have … please be a bit more patient.” This exchange demonstrates the pressure Nku was under to facilitate the operation.
  • Warnings of Consequences: In another message, Alpha warned, “I am telling you we are gonna be in big s*** if we don’t get this stuff today. We made a lot of promises and not delivered.” This indicates the high stakes involved in the drug operation.

Linking the Chats to the Drug Bust

Commissioner Sandile Khumalo questioned Sebola about the relevance of these chats to the Aeroton drug bust. While the messages did not explicitly mention Aeroton, Sebola highlighted that Nku was discussing the drugs just a week prior to the controversial bust, where he was also present. The location tracking corroborated Nku’s presence on the same route as the cocaine shipment.

Implications for Law Enforcement

The evidence presented at the Madlanga Commission raises profound concerns about the level of corruption within South Africa’s law enforcement agencies. The apparent collusion between Nku and members of the police force not only undermines public trust but also highlights the challenges faced in combating organized crime.

As the commission continues its investigation, the implications of Nku’s actions and those of the implicated officials may have far-reaching consequences for the fight against drug trafficking in South Africa. The outcome of this case could reshape the landscape of policing and drug enforcement in the country, demanding accountability and transparency from those sworn to protect its citizens.
